2025 Earth Day Rundown

Earth Day Run Down 2025

Earth Month is here, and we’re excited to announce that the City of Columbia will be participating in the 2025 Earth Day Festival on April 27! Keep reading to learn about the history of Earth Day, why it matters, and how you can get involved this year.

Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, is a global day of environmental education, climate action, and appreciation for our planet. The first Earth Day took place in 1970 when Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin launched a nationwide movement to raise awareness about environmental issues. Sparked by the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, this movement led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and major environmental legislation, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act.

As Columbia continues working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build climate resilience, Earth Month is a great opportunity to engage the community in meaningful action. Achieving our sustainability goals requires collective effort, and Earth Day serves as an inspiring reminder that every action counts.

One of the best ways to take part in Earth Day is by joining your community in celebration! The Columbia Area Earth Day Festival is on Sunday, April 27, from 12:00-7:00 PM at Peace Park. The festival will feature live music, food vendors, a kids’ area, and plenty of opportunities to learn about climate action. Whether you’re looking to volunteer or simply enjoy the festivities, this event is a great way to connect with others who care about sustainability. (Rain Date for the event is May 4th)

- Sign up to volunteer and help make the event a success.
- Enjoy live music and support local food vendors.
- Learn simple ways to take action for our community and environment

- You will find lots of information on Eco Avenue, their sustainability block between 7th & 8th on Elm Street. Get gardening tips, talk with solar vendors, buy some sustainable products, and learn about organizations working to save the planet.

- You will also find great entertainment on their music stages, featuring something for everyone.

- The Kids Park offers lots of fun for kids as they learn about conservation and nature from the on site education and park partners.
